FAQ - Enterprise Lotus You can either click on a question to take you directly to the answer or scroll through to read all of them. 1. What are the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Lotus Domino requirements? BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Lotus Domino requires that Lotus® DominoTM Server and Client 4.6 or higher are installed (where the Lotus Domino server is in the LocalDomainServers group). Windows NT® 4.0 server, Service Pack 3 or higher must be installed on the server. Back to top 2. Does BlackBerry Enterprise Server support Domino Cluster? Yes, it does support cluster members. If a user's mail file is located on a server that is a member of a Lotus Domino cluster, BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Lotus Domino will behave normally, connecting to the replica of the mail file as specified in the person document in the Domino Directory. BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Lotus Domino does not, at this time, support automatic failover to another cluster member in this configuration. If the primary mail server goes down, our application will skip this user for the duration of the outage, and pick up where it left off when the server comes back online.
3. What are BlackBerry Enterprise Server's two Lotus Notes databases, and what they are used for? The Lotus Notes databases, called blackberryprofiles.nsf and blackberryoutbox.nsf, are a user configuration database and an outbound queue database respectively. They are accessed by the BlackBerryAdmins Group administrators to run and administer the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Software. Back to top 4. What do the statuses New Message, Sent, and Submitted mean when they appear in the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Outbound Queue? Messages can be in only one of three statuses at a time: New Message, Sent, or Submitted. They are in New Message status when they first arrive in the BlackBerryOutbox.nsf (the outbound message queue database), and will be submitted, and finally sent. If a user deletes a queued message from its mailbox at any time, the message is removed from the outbound queue and a cancel request is sent to the BlackBerry Infrastructure. If the BlackBerry Infrastructure does not confirm acknowledgement of delivery for a message, the message is re-submitted by the BlackBerry Enterprise Server every 4 hours, as long as the original message still exists in the mailbox. If the message is removed from the mailbox, when the BlackBerry Enterprise Server ultimately tries to send it, it won't be sent.
5. Do you have plans to port the BlackBerry Enterprise Server solution to platforms other than Windows NT (i.e. UNIX based platforms)? No. Note that only the BlackBerry Enterprise Server needs to be on Windows NT, while the Lotus Domino servers hosting the mail files can be on any platform supported by Lotus. Back to top 6. What current numbers do you have for scaling? In other words, how many users per Lotus Domino Server can run BlackBerry? The mail users will remain on their current home mail servers, with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server product ideally running on a server dedicated to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server function. No mail users will use the BlackBerry Enterprise Server as their home mail server. In this configuration, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server can scale up and out to accommodate your user community. Specific numbers are difficult to provide, because many factors can influence the situation. For example:
You can also add more than one BlackBerry Enterprise Server should you reach a performance ceiling on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server itself. Normally, one BlackBerry Enterprise Server can support more than 500 users. Back to top 7. How do I let the BlackBerry Desktop Software know when BlackBerry Enterprise Server is moved to another box? Go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry]\"NotesServer", delete the value of "NotesServer" and restart the BlackBerry Desktop Software. Back to top 8. Why can't a delete on a Lotus Notes client be synchronized to a BlackBerry handheld device? As long as you do not empty the trash after you mark the item for deletion, either by deleting it from the mail client or dragging the message to the trash, the deletion synchronization works. It will not, however, delete the item from the handheld if you empty the trash. This is by design. Back to top 9. Why are there lots of messages in New Message status in the BlackBerry Outbound Queue? In the BlackBerryOutbox.nsf, only a total of 5 messages for every BlackBerry Enterprise Server user will be in the Sent, or Submitted states combined. This is to prevent a user from flooding the network. If, for example, you have 30 messages to redirect to your handheld at a time, only a total of 5 messages could be in the "sent" and "submitted" status; the other 25 remain in "New Message" status and will not be redirected to the handheld until one or all of the initial 5 messages have been delivered to the handheld.
