1. What is BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management (MMC Snap-in)?

BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management (often referred to as the MMC Snap-in) allows Microsoft Exchange 5.5 services and software to interact with the Microsoft Exchange 2000 servers. Back to top

2. How does it help me?

The MMC Snap-in will assist in the transition from a pure Microsoft Exchange 5.5 environment to a mixed Microsoft Exchange 5.5 and Microsoft Exchange 2000 environment, or possibly straight into a Microsoft Exchange 2000 environment with regards to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. This transition will allow consistent administration of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server accounts while allowing the accounts to be moved to the Microsoft Exchange 2000 platform. Back to top

3. What are the system requirements for the MMC Snap-in?

The system requirements for the MMC Snap-in are:
bulletWindows® 2000 (Professional or Server) with Service Pack 1
bulletWindows 2000 Administration Tools package
bulletMicrosoft Exchange 2000 System Manager, with the following permissions:

View Only Administrator (minimum) access at the Administrative Groups level in Microsoft Exchange 2000 to be able to read from the Active Directory. To set View Only Administrator permissions using Microsoft Exchange 2000 System Manager, right-click on an administrative group and select Delegate control, and then add the BlackBerry Enterprise Management Administrator account with View Only Administrator permissions.

Administrator Information store, set at the Mailbox store level or the Microsoft Exchange server level. To set Administrator Information store permissions, right-click on a mailbox or Microsoft Exchange server and select Properties, and then go to the Security tab and add the BlackBerry Enterprise Management Administrator account with at least Administer Information store permissions.

Where the MMC Snap-in is installed in a mixed environment, the system requirements on the Microsoft Exchange side are the same as those for the regular BlackBerry Enterprise Server: Back to top
bulletMicrosoft Exchange Administrator 5.5 (with Microsoft Exchange Service Pack 4 installed)
bulletPC with an Intel® Pentium® II processor or compatible (233 Mhz or higher, 128 MB RAM, 1 GB free hard disk space)
bulletWindows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 3 or higher)
bulletAccess to the regular Microsoft Exchange server

4. Which versions of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will be able to support the MMC Snap-in feature?

The MMC Snap-in will function with any version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 2.0 or higher. Back to top

5. Is the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management (MMC Snap-in) a separate product or is it an upgrade to the next release?

This additional functionality will be released as a Service Pack for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Back to top

6. Will the BlackBerry Enterprise Server work without the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management (MMC Snap-in)?

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server will work on a non-Microsoft Exchange 2000 native platform without the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management (MMC Snap-in) Software. (Microsoft Exchange administration extensions in a Microsoft Exchange 5.5 or mixed environment are used instead to administrate the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.) For a BlackBerry Enterprise Server to function in a Microsoft Exchange 2000 native environment, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management (MMC Snap-in) Software must be present. Back to top

7. Does BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management (MMC Snap-in) work faster/better than the regular BlackBerry Enterprise Server administration through Microsoft Exchange 5.5, or is this simply an integration package to work with Microsoft Exchange 2000?

There are no additional features, other than the ability to talk to a Microsoft Exchange 2000 native environment. Back to top
